HC Raps Kiran On Polavaram Agreement

The hastiness in which the Kiran Kumar Reddy government had entered into an agreement with Transstroy-JES UES consortium for taking up multi-thousand crore Polavaram irrigation project came in for a sharp criticism from the Andhra Pradesh high court.
The high court, acting on a petition filed by Soma Constructions, sought to know why the government had to sign a late-night agreement with Transstroy, though the matter was still pending in the court. It asked the government to submit to the court the report of the high-powered committee constituted on Polavaram by next week.
The Chief Minister appears to be in such a hurry that he had ordered the contractors to commence the project works within a week and that he would lay the foundation stone for the project. Obviously, he wants to get into the history of the state for launching the much-awaited project works. However, it is easier said than done, because the project is being opposed by neighbouring states, besides the local environmentalists.
