Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy, who has been making all out
efforts to stall the formation of Telangana at any cost, has come out
with a fresh proposal to convince the Congress high command to defer the
decision on the state bifurcation.
According to sources close to him, the chief minister is likely to request the high command to postpone the decision on Telangana for another couple of months, since the state government has been conducting the local body elections, which would be completed by September end.
“Though the just concluded first phase of gram panchayat elections were held on non-party basis, the Congress-backed candidates bagged many of the panchayats and that is a good sign for the party. In the next two stages, there would be elections to mandal parishads and zilla parishads, which would be held on party-basis. They would be followed by elections to municipalities and corporations, which would also be on party-basis,” he would point out.
Sources quoting Kiran said any decision by the Centre in favour of Telangana would have a lot of bearing on the party prospects in all these elections.
“Let us see the performance of the Congress party in these elections and then take a decision on the state bifurcation later to suit the party interests,” he would tell the Centre.
A political analyst, however, said it is unlikely that the elections to mandal parishad, zilla parishad and municipal bodies would be completed by September end, as the BC reservation issue is yet to be resolved. Any court case would completely jeopardise the entire schedule.
“By the time this process is completed, the general election mood will be setting in and the focus would shift from Telangana to the general elections. And that is what Kiran wants,” he observed
