With the early elections to Lok Sabha appear to be round the corner,
the Congress high command has started conducting a survey on the party’s
prospects in Andhra Pradesh. And in many constituencies, it has found
that the sitting MP candidates have bleak chances of winning again.
Take for instance Chevella parliamentary constituency represented by union minister for science and technology S Jaipal Reddy. Amar Kale, an envoy of AICC vice-president Rahul Gandhi who has been touring different parts of the state to collect the opinion of the party workers at the ground level, is learnt to have found that Jaipal Reddy did not have bright chances of winning the Chevella seat.
In an interaction with Congress party leaders and cadres of Ranga Reddy district on Monday, Kale was told that there were not many takers for Jaipal Reddy.
“We don’t mind if Jaipal is fielded again, but the chances of his victory are low. We will accept any other strong candidate from Chevella. At the same time, the party should come out with a clear stand on Telangana, if it has to win the seats in the region,” textiles minister Prasad Rao, who represents Vikarabad assembly constituency told the AICC envoy.
Under these circumstances, one doubts whether Jaipal would get second chance from Chevella. There are also reports that he might not contest the next elections without the high command clearing the air on Telangana issue.
