The Congress party is likely to make an official announcement on the
Telangana statehood issue on the evening of July 31 and the Congress
Working Committee which is expected to meet on August 2 will ratify the
same.
These were the indications coming from New Delhi on Friday evening.
According to sources from the national capital, Congress president Sonia Gandhi made it clear to chief minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy in a two-minute meeting in the afternoon that the decision on state bifurcation had been taken and it was irreversible.
Sonia apparently did not give any time to Kiran for further talks.
The other leaders of the core committee who had meetings with Kiran and PCC chief Botsa Satyanarayana at the war room also indicated that there was no scope for further negotiations on the Telangana issue.
The high command asked the two leaders to see that the loss to the Congress party in the Seemandhra region is minimized.
In fact, Digvijay Singh could have made an announcement on Friday evening itself, but he refrained from doing so after a warning from the intelligence authorities that it would jeopardise the gram panchayat elections to be held on Saturday and July 31. Thus, the announcement has been withheld till July 31 evening, sources said.
